Firoz Cachalia to approach his assignment with an ‘open mind’

Acting Police Minister-designate, Professor Firoz Cachalia, says he will approach his assignment with an open mind.

He says part of his work as a Police Minister will be to focus on the effectiveness of Crime Intelligence as well as the Political Killings Task Team at the centre of allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has been appointed as Acting Police Minister by President Cyril Ramaphosa with immediate effect from Tuesday.

Mantashe will serve until Cachalia assumes the position in an acting capacity from 1 August.

Cachalia says he will set his key priorities once he has met with the National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.

“I do not want to make any pronouncements on this matter now, because I haven’t had an opportunity to meet with the Police Commissioner. I think I need to do that before I come to any conclusions, in engaging with him.”

“I hope it can be a joint decision. But certainly, the question is about that unit and why it was dismantled, whether there were good reasons or not. And of course, questions were raised whether it should be reinstated. But I don’t have an informed opinion on that matter at this point.”
