Fire Services still battling a blaze in Kogmanskloof, Cape Town

The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM)Fire Services say they are still battling to contain a blaze on the mountain peaks of Kogmanskloof, near Ashton.

Spokesperson, Jo-Anne Otto, says that aerial support is ineffective at this stage.

“Teams from both CapeNature and CWDM Fire Services are on site to address the fire line as and when it becomes accessible. At this stage, the fire is burning through very old fynbos on CapeNature property,” says Otto.

She says due to the dense and aged vegetation, aerial resources remain ineffective, and teams are relying on manual firefighting methods.

“This is a challenging and ecologically-sensitive area, requiring careful management to protect both biodiversity and safety. With temperatures expected to exceed 35ºC, there is concern about possible flare-ups in previously contained areas,” says Otto.

She says hot stumps or dislodged rocks may roll down the slopes, potentially igniting new fires in lower sections.
