Wildfire at Du Toitskloof Pass in the Cape Winelands.
Firefighters continue to battle a wildfire at Du Toitskloof Pass in the Cape Winelands.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) fire services spokesperson, Anesca Roodt, says the blaze started on the Worcester side of the pass on Friday afternoon and has spread across difficult terrain.
She says additional support has been deployed and firefighters used strategic techniques overnight.
Cooler nighttime temperatures also helped to slow the fire.
Roodt says two active fire lines remain and will be the focus of operations on Saturday.
Roodt adds that fresh fire crews from Nieuwedrift Fire Station and contracted ground teams from CWDM and CapeNature have been deployed.
“Du Toitskloof Pass is currently open to motorists. Road users are advised to drive with caution as smoke in the area may reduce visibility, to give way to emergency vehicles, and to be aware that road closures may occur at short notice. Hikers and mountain bikers planning to visit the area this weekend are advised to consult CapeNature, as trails on the Worcester side of the pass have been closed until further notice,” says Roodt.
