Fire contained in some areas in the Mossel Bay Municipality

The Mossel Bay Municipality in the Western Cape says the fire that has been raging has been contained in some areas, including the northern flank in Aalwyndal, the eastern flank in Island View and the southern flank on the N2.

However, the fire is still active on the western flank, the farming area adjacent to Aalwyndal.

Residents who were evacuated on Tuesday night have been allowed to return to their homes in the areas where the fire has been contained.

Adverse weather conditions, including strong to gale force winds and inaccessible terrain, contributed to the rapid spread of the fires to Aalwyndal, Island View and Vakansieplaas.

Firefighting operations saw multiple fire crews involved, including those from other municipalities. Aerial firefighting is still continuing.

The municipality says numbers cannot be confirmed until a full assessment, but it has been confirmed that multiple structures, several vehicles, other infrastructure and property have sustained various levels of damage.

Three firefighters sustained injuries and one was admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation.  Firefighting efforts continue.
