Fire breaks out at a chemical company in Germiston

A fire broke out at a chemical company in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, this afternoon. The employees were evacuated from the premises and from other neighbouring companies.

One person has sustained second-degree burns and is currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services Spokesperson, William Ntladi, says, “Currently, we managed to contain the fire, and we are busy with damping down only those several hotspots that are still burning. It is alleged that they were busy decanting one of the trucks, and there was a spark that took place and ignited the truck, and the fire spread throughout the entire company.” ‎

Meanwhile, Police in Mpumalanga are investigating the cause of fire that consumed two container offices at the Schoemansdal Police Station in Nkomazi.

Provincial Police Spokesperson Donald Mdhluli says no injuries were reported. He says several other items were destroyed in the blaze.

Mdhluli says the fire has since been extinguished.

“Assessments will be conducted to determine the extensiveness of the damage caused and the public will be informed as more information emerges. Meanwhile, the investigation regarding the cause thereof continues. The SAPS remains committed to maintaining operational capacity and will ensure that all necessary measures are undertaken to ensure that there is no hampering of service delivery to the community members during this time. Police urge anyone with relevant information to come on board,” explains Mdhluli.
