The mother of a toddler who survived the mass shooting at Reiger Park, in Ekurhuleni, says while she is heartbroken, she is also proud of her late partner, who died protecting their child.
Harldene Naidoo’s partner is among the six people killed in the shooting. The child sustained minor injuries.
Police say suspects driving two vehicles opened fire, killing six people, on Saturday. The motive for the attack is not yet known, and no arrests have been made.
Naidoo says she is proud of the father of her child. “I am heartbroken, at the same time, I am also proud of what he did. I know he didn’t do it for no reason; he had his reasons, and it was to save our child. I am proud of him. He wasn’t a gangster, let’s start there. Everyone criticised him, calling him a gangster, but he did nothing. He was a happy, funny person, always a joking person.”
Meanwhile, the community members have gathered outside the local police station for National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to address them.
Masemola is visiting the community and is expected to meet Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Fred Kekana to discuss the police’s response to last night’s deadly shooting.
Community member Stephanie Minnaar says, “And they don’t even do proper investigations because my grandson was on his aunt, they had footage of how this guy started out, huh? No. Justice must be done, and it’s not gonna end here. It’s not gonna end. I’m just saying, I’m not happy, and I can’t even explain this. We are so angry.”
