Fannie Masemola, SANDF’s Maphwanya to hold joint media briefing

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief Rudzani Maphwanya will hold a joint media briefing in Pretoria on Sunday morning.

This after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s deployment of soldiers to crime-affected provinces.

On Friday, Ramaphosa officially authorised the deployment of over 2 000 soldiers to crime-ridden areas in Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape, North West and the Free State.

The SANDF members will assist police in their fight against crime including gangsterism and illegal mining.

National Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says, “It will just be an opportunity to clarify the deployments that are already in place in Gauteng, what has been achieved so far, and obviously clarity on what the army will be doing in Gauteng, especially in the gang areas. I mean, we always received reports of multiple people being killed in gang areas in Gauteng.”
