The family of murdered Vyaksha Sookdew has welcomed the 23-year sentence handed to her killer, Sugendran Rodney Naicker, in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.
Naicker pleaded guilty to the murder of Sookdew, his then-girlfriend, who was killed in December 2023 at her Havenside home in Durban. She was bludgeoned to death with a four-pound hammer days before Christmas.
Sookdew’s cousin, Tashleen Kasipershad, shared the family’s reaction.
“We are relieved that there has been some form of justice and that the person responsible is being held accountable, but at the same time, no sentence could be enough or make up for losing her. She’s gone and we live with that. We are grateful the killer was sentenced, but it doesn’t take away the pain or bring her back,” Kasipershad says.
