Slain Mpumalanga EFF branch Treasurer Dan Makutu.
The Makutu family in Kabokweni near White River in Mpumalanga is calling for justice for their slain family member, Dan Makutu.
Makutu who was a community activist and an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) branch treasurer was killed on Christmas Day.
The 50-year-old was shot multiple times a few metres from his home.
His sister, Carol Nkambule, says she is not sure why her brother was targeted.
“We wouldn’t really know because as a community activist, he was busy with everything. So, he stepped on many toes. As I said, if there’s water issues, he’ll be there. If there’s road issues, he’ll be there. But even if there’s family issues, he’ll still be there. If there’s issues with employers, he’ll be there. So basically, with the work that he was doing, he was creating more enemies than friends.”
Makutu was instrumental in highlighting the water crises in Kabokweni.
He was elected the EFF’s branch Treasurer three months ago.
EFF member in the province, Bonga Mashile, says the party has lost a strong soldier.
“We have lost a soldier, we have lost a brother, we have lost an uncle, that’s what we used to call him, Uncle Dan. So to us, it’s a very, very big shock and a very big loss to this branch and to this community, not forgetting the family as well. So, we are very, very saddened about this. But we will try and soldier on, even though the boots are too big to fill now, but we will have to try and soldier on.”
