Families seek answers as Khampepe Commission is set to begin

The Foundation for Human Rights says 25 families are seeking answers to critical questions as the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry gets set to start its work in Johannesburg on Monday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa established the commission in May this year. Its task is to investigate the alleged political suppression of investigations and prosecutions of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s cases.

The foundation’s executive director Zaid Kimmie says they are glad that after a long the delay, the commission will finally start its work.

“They are hoping for some answers (as to) why the NPA and the SAPS did not fulfill their constitutional obligations to investigate and prosecute the crimes that were put before them. After the TRC ended, there were a number of cases that were handed to the NPA. The TRC then indicated that prosecution should take place, but in fact nothing happened.”
