Former Crime Intelligence officer Pilasande Dotyeni.
Former Crime Intelligence official Pilasande Dotyeni has warned about the dangers of internal power struggles within Crime Intelligence.
He was testifying before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.
Dotyeni, who was the second witness before the committee on Tuesday, alleges that the factional battles inside the unit are not ordinary disputes.
He warned that lives can be destroyed when senior figures use the institution’s vast resources in these battles.
“A faction within Crime Intelligence is not the same as a faction in an administrative department. Members of Crime Intelligence hold some of the most powerful resources in this country. You can die — your life can be destroyed. They can access your personal life, parts of your life that an ordinary person cannot.”
“That is the danger when you talk about factional battles at this level, because these are law-enforcement agents. When you have two powerful forces clashing, like a provincial commissioner and senior leadership, they will use the resources available to them within the institution.”
