Extended Cabinet Lekgotla discusses growing the economy

The local economy is gradually showing some positive growth; this came out at the Extended Cabinet Lekgotla at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse in Pretoria.

The two-day gathering is called to discuss plans and priorities for the year, which include among others growing the economy and improving local government.

President Cyril Ramaphosa and his deputy Paul Mashatile, Ministers and their deputies as well as SALGA members are attending the meeting.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbuzo Ntshavheni says despite the country’s challenges, the economy is on the mend.

“We had a presentation from the Minister of Finance on the macro-economic framework of the country focused on what are the things that we noticed last year, for instance the cost of borrowing for government of SA has reduced drastically. When we started with the budget last year, we started with 13% cost of borrowing and today we are at 9% showing that our fiscal prudence and fiscal management is strengthening. We have seen a year-on-year 2,1% on the GDP over the same period and also we have seen in terms of the performance of the rand that the rand has stabilised, there are those who would claim that it has stabilised because of what is happening the US, no it has stabilised because of the work that the country is doing.”
