A view of an entrance to Robben Island.
Ex-Robben Island political prisoners are boarding the Madiba 1 ferry from the Nelson Mandela Gateway to head to the island for a reunion today.
The Arts and Culture Department has organised the reunion, in partnership with the Association for ex-political prisoners and the Robben Island Museum.
The aim of the event is to honour nearly 2 000 former political prisoners who were held on the Island and other facilities during apartheid.
Veterans from neighbouring African countries, as well as Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie will also attend the reunion.
A wall of remembrance will be unveiled, and medals will be awarded to surviving former political prisoners.
Statues to honour Nelson Mandela, Autshumato Krotoa, Robert Sobukwe (an ex-detainee), Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, and Daniel Seatlholo will also be erected.
