Eviction notices to be served on illegal Wingfield dwellers

The Sheriff of the court is expected to serve eviction notices Monday to remove dwellers at Wingfield near Goodwood and Paint City in Bellville in Cape Town.

This follows a High Court ruling granting the City of Cape Town, together with the national departments of Home Affairs and Public Works, permission to remove unlawful dwellers in both areas.

Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis says there are still around 160 unlawful occupants at the Wingfield site and 200 at Paint City. He says the aim is to restore public use of the sites and end the poor conditions.

“The sheriff of the court will do that service not the city. Please note this is the start of the eviction process essentially kicking off the court process. So, this does not mean the eviction will happen on Monday, but it will kick off the formal court hearing process. That is good news and a positive development that will now run its course,” says Hill-Lewis.
