The eThekwini municipality has resolved to work with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport to speed up the processing of operating permits for taxi operators.
The resolution follows Wednesday night’s marathon meeting, which representatives of the department, the municipality and the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) attended.
Meanwhile, Santaco’s organised shutdown is continuing and has resulted in thousands of commuters being stranded in the eThekwini region.
The action comes after more than two dozen taxis were impounded in Clermont for operating without permits.
eThekwini Mayoral spokesperson Mluleki Mntungwa says, “Well, regarding the impounding of the vehicles, the city has already started engaging the Clermont and KwaDabeka Taxi Association and is in the process of releasing the impounded vehicles within the ambit of the law. We must emphasise that this process depends largely on the co-operation of the taxi operators.”
He adds: “In the best interest of the community of eThekwini, the Mayor appealed to the leadership of the taxi industry to suspend the strike and to resume taxi operations in all affected areas in eThekwini. As the city, we are committed to continuing to engage the taxi industry to find an amicable solution to the challenges that have been raised.”
