Electricity contractors who are employed by the eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal are threatening to down tools on Monday should the city fail to pay them.

Some of these contractors claim that they have not been paid by the municipality for over four months.

They gathered outside the Durban City Hall demanding a meeting with municipal authorities.

President of the eThekwini Electrical Workforce, Bandile Sibiya says, “We are sending a message to the municipal authorities that as of Monday next week we will down tools. We can’t commence any work if they can’t resolve this issue, especially the priority one which is our salaries. We must get the money, remember this is the festive season, in a festive season we are supposed to make our families happy but we are failing to do so because the municipality has not paid us for the work we have done.”

Meanwhile, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba says the city’s executive council is looking into the matter.

“The law says we must pay our contractors within 30 days of invoicing. So, it is a matter that we are looking at it is a matter that we are monitoring as the executive council and the executive committee of this council and our city manager reports on how well we are performing on our target to ensure that we pay our service providers within 30 days.”
