Eskom won’t reveal cost of upgrading metre system

2 minutes

Eskom could not be drawn on what the cost implication of upgrading the electricity metre system will have on its already constrained balance sheet and customers in the long term. It is anticipated that Eskom may incur costs for the upgrade, which includes human capital to man the various sites, as well as the software upgrade of the electricity metre boxes.

This as thousands of residents queue up outside various Eskom sites today to get assistance in upgrading their prepaid metres.

The power utility has emphasised that it would have lost out on the sales of the latest electricity tokens had it not migrated timeously.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says, “If we didn’t do this process, these metres were going to expire today. And customers wouldn’t be able to buy today because whatever they would have bought would not have been accepted by their metres. So, we would have lost those sales that would have come through from our customers and we would have inconvenienced our customers because if you can’t recharge your metre, it means you will stay in the dark. So, I think this is a win-win situation. It is not something that one should see as an inconvenience or something that will cost Eskom.”
