Eskom warns N West communities about prepaid meter scammers

Power utility Eskom has warmed communities in the North West to be cautious of individuals posing as Eskom officials, requesting payment for installation of new smart prepaid meter boxes.

The new smart prepaid split meter roll-out started last year, to replace the older meter, for better grid reliability and enable remote monitoring.

Eskom North West spokesperson Ezekiel Baruti says installation is provided at no cost and communities will be informed through official communication channels, before any work takes place.

“Before the smart meters are installed, Eskom holds engagements with communities regarding the planned rollout of smart meters. Eskom also does pre-installation SMS campaigns where customers with valid cell phone numbers are sent messages by Eskom. The next stage is where Eskom does the announcement on social media platforms for the areas where smart meter rollout is going to take place and that includes radio stations. Customers are asked not to pay any cash to any Eskom employee, contractor, or anybody.”
