Escapee recaptured and back in Pollsmoor

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) says the escaped prisoner at Pollsmoor prison in the Western Cape, has been rearrested.

35-year-old Yanga Wayithi escaped ealier this week while maintaining the facility’s grounds.

He’s serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing.

Correctional Services’ spokesperson Singabakho Mxumalo says Wayithi will be facing additional charges related to the escape.

“Wayithi was apprehended at about half past one in the early hours of Wednesday February 12. He’s now back to Pollsmoor Correctional Facility and will face additional charges related to this escape from lawful custody. A full-scale investigation is under way to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape.”
