FILE | Initiates from Ga-Mothapo in Limpopo line up for their ceremony after completing their time at an initiation school on 14 July 2024.
A 19-year-old initiate has died in the Sekhukhune District in Limpopo.
According to the Limpopo Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Department, the epileptic initiate was taken to Philadelphia Hospital after experiencing health complications.
Authorities say Raymond Sekele was taken to hospital where he later died on Sunday.
The department says the bereaved family has confirmed the initiate had a history of epilepsy and was on medical treatment when he was taken to the initiation school at Dennilton outside Groblersdal.
The department has expressed sadness on the death.
In its quest to ensure zero deaths are recorded at the initiation schools, the department embarked on a new process of vetting traditional surgeons within the province.
Traditional leaders, traditional surgeons and government officials attended a compulsory workshop in Polokwane ahead of the initiation season at the end of last month.
