Enyobeni tragedy inquest adjourned till August

The Enyobeni tragedy inquest has been adjourned until the fourth of August.

The inquest at East London Regional Court sitting in Mdantsane seeks to investigate if there is anyone who should be held responsible for the death of 21 patrons in June 2022.

Investigative officer, Zingisa Majova and tavern Manager Siyakhangela Ndevu were the only witnesses that testified this week.

In his testimony, Ndevu said he cannot be blamed for the death of the patrons, adding that, parents should be somehow responsible for neglecting their children.

One of the parents of the deceased, Khululekile Ncadana says Ndevu’s testimony was confusing.

“He is contradicting himself, so we will see when all the processes unfold and the chairperson of the inquest will make a decision. But for now he seems not to know a lot of things, including the time, although in his statement he has different times and the people he says he has given statements to and said they are there. The police didn’t know those people they didn’t know their names. But now he says he doesn’t know their names, and he never mentioned the times. So its quite confusing.”

Meanwhile, June 26 marked the third-year anniversary of Enyobeni tragedy. Families say they are still unclear as to what the cause of the deaths.
