Environmental organization concerned about crime at Table Mountain

An environmental organization, Take Back Our Mountains in the Western Cape, is demanding increased security measures at Table Mountain in Cape Town in a bid to reduce crime and violence.

The organisation has now launched a petition calling on the South African National Parks (SANParks) to tackle crime and the deterioration of conditions on the mountain.

Meanwhile, SANParks has denied that there is an increase in crime on the mountain and says the numbers are stable.

Taahir Osman, Founder of Take Back Our Mountains, says they’ve noted with concern an increase in violent crime at Table Mountain

“We have a great big network on a WhatsApp group and a thousand members representing hiking, running, climbing mountain biking clubs and when these incidents happen, we hear first-hand about the incident, but the victim is maybe reluctant to go the police station. Then we also have foreigners who get troubled and their cases don’t get followed through. A lot of foreigners get robbed on Table Mountain and they just don’t report. It’s very bad for tourism at the moment because a lot of people are afraid to come to Cape Town. We have to increase boots on the ground and technology and hire a highly trained manager to manage safety and security on Table Mountain.”
