Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille has defended their court challenge against the Employment Equity Amendment Act (EEAA).
The DA will this morning head to the High Court in Pretoria to challenge the Act.
The party has argued that the legislation is discriminatory, unfair and has a negative impact on hundreds of thousands of jobs.
The DA’s court challenge has sparked backlash from many including the African National Congress (ANC) Parliamentary Caucus.
According to the caucus, the legal challenge is an attack on progress the country has made in achieving an equitable society.
Briefing the media in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg yesterday, Zille says, “We’re not flying blind here, we’ve had an employment equity regime, which was meant to drive employment equity for the last 25 years and we’ve seen since 2008, unemployment almost double from 5.5 million on the expanded definition to 11.1 million last year, and that is primary as a result of failed government policies.”
