EMPD impounds 66 unroadworthy minibus-taxis

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Taxi Task Team has impounded 66 unroadworthy minibus-taxis this week in Tsakane, Germiston and Boksburg.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with Gauteng Traffic Police and SAPS officers. During the joint operation, officers discovered that the vehicles were operating without proper permits and operator cards.

The EMPD says all of the impounded minibus-taxis have been taken to the Benoni Provincial Pound.

It has reminded taxi owners and drivers that it is a legal requirement under the National Road Traffic Act to ensure that their minibuses are properly registered and fitted with valid number plates before operating them on any public road.

The EMPD says its operations seek to address compliance and to ensure the safety of commuters as well as school children making use of scholar transport.
