Elsie’s River community living in fear after shooting of teenager

Community activists from Elsie’s River on the Cape Flats say the brutal killing of a 14-year-old boy, who was gunned down in the area last week, has left the area distraught.

The teenager was walking home from school when he was killed in a suspected gang-related incident.

An accused linked to his murder has briefly appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police had initially arrested five suspects in connection with the murder.

The other four suspects were released on Monday due to insufficient evidence.

Community leader Radley Andrews says they are living in constant fear.

“We as the community of Elsies River are tired of the genocide that is happening. Our people are being extinguished. We are being killed on daily and weekly basis and we as the community of Elsies River, we are saying enough. Police, President Cyril Ramaphosa, where are you? We’ve reached out to you asking for help but nothing is happening. A young child of 14-years-old, still in school, a beautiful boy, was shot beyond recognition.”

Elsies River teen murder case postponed:

The matter has been postponed to the 28th of October for further investigation and to finalise several outstanding documents, including ballistics and DNA reports.

Video footage of the shooting incident may also be used in court, once it is available.
