Transport Minister Barbara Creecy visits the Transnet exhibition stand during the Southern African Railways Association Conference in Sandton, Johannesburg on August 26, 2025.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says government has chosen 11 private companies that could assist Transnet in transporting freight by rail.
She revealed this in Parliament while answering questions in the National Assembly.
However, Creecy stated that the companies will still have to go through regulatory screening before being formally selected.
She says it is expected that this additional support will increase the bulk of Transnet’s freight transportation by almost 20 million tonnes each year.
Creecy says, “We are extremely pleased that Transnet has managed to accept 11 private companies to assist us in moving freight on the network. Let me say that should these companies manage to pass the regulatory processes, they will in due course increase the amount of tournage that we are able to transport on the network by almost 20 million tonnes of freight per annum.”
