Ekurhuleni to auction 173 impounded cars

The City of Ekurhuleni says it will auction about 173 impounded vehicles by end of January next year if not collected by their owners. The City has warned it will sell the vehicles to pay any costs incurred, if the owners fail to collect them within 120 days after been impounded.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) says in terms of the law if impounded vehicles have been stored for more than four months, the municipal council may dispose of them.

The vehicles have been impounded by EMPD for various reasons, such as their condition not being roadworthy, while some were abandoned. The EMPD’s Constable Sibusiso Mabaso says they’ve been stored at various pounds for more than four months and are now filling up the yards and leaving no space.

“The owners need to come forward, to come and claim their vehicles from the pound. They need to give their certificate of registration. They need to bring their ID books and their also being liable to pay for certain fees because we charge for storage, we charge for towing, we also charge for the admin fees,” says Mabaso.

EMPD’s Superintendent Dennis Nendombeloni says anyone is allowed to be part of the auctioning process that’s conducted usually in Boksburg.

“There’ll be a person that will be appointed to be an auctioneer and the cars will be sold at an auction, but as a scrap because you can’t register it. Remember the process you have to deregister the vehicle with the licencing. But before we go to auction some people will come and claim their vehicle because they’ve seen the cars are going to be sold. We still give them the chance to pay and release those vehicles,” says Nendombeloni.

EMPD’s Lieutenant Colonel, Kelebogile Thepa says the cars have been kept at various pounds across the metro.

“The legislation permits for council to dispose of vehicles after various notifications have been given to these owners. We’re talking they have been notified by means of registered post and now, we’ve now taken to media and social media, various platforms in essence just to request that they come and claim what is rightfully theirs and of course just to take cognisant of the fact that there are fees payable towards this entire exercise,” says Thepa.
