Ekurhuleni Mayor wants police to probe City officials’ murders

City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza says he has written to National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola to investigate a series of shootings involving senior Ekurhuleni municipal officials.

This follows the assassination of the municipality’s head of forensic audits, Mpho Mafole.

The official was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on the R23 in Kempton Park on Monday.

The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and police are investigating.

Xhakaza says the city has witnessed a disturbing trend of violent attacks against officials fighting corruption.

In 2023, the city’s Chief Financial Officer Kagiso Lerutla survived a shooting, while Simnikiwe Mapini, an adjudicator in the finance department, was tragically killed in the same year. And now Mafole, whom Xhakaza says was targeted for his commitment to clean governance.

He says the city cannot allow intimidation and violence to derail the mission to transform Ekurhuleni into a renewed City, defined by good governance, transparency, and accountability.

Xhakaza adds that the work and sacrifices of Mafole and others before him will not be in vain.
