Ekapa Mine in Kimberley in the Northern Cape.
Ekapa Minerals Mine in the Northern Cape, where five miners remain trapped after a mud rush incident last Tuesday, has been placed under liquidation.
All mining activities at the Kimberley mine have been halted.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says it will approach the courts for a way forward and a clear plan on how the trapped men will be retrieved.
Numsa Kimberley organiser, Lerato Mohatlane, says: “We are informed that the mine will be liquidated and then all the workers have not received their salaries as we speak as they were supposed to be paid today on the 25th of February. All of them have been told that they will not get their salaries this month, that is why we are here to make sure that the general manager, the CEO, does not come out of this mine up until the workers have received their salaries.”
The mine has not yet issued a statement in this regard.
