Eight suspects, including a ward councillor, who were arrested at the weekend on charges of extortion at a road construction site in Roosenekal, Limpopo, are expected to appear in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court today.

Police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng says the ward councillor in the Elias Motsoaledi Municipality allegedly led a group of men who approached the construction company owner.

Thakeng says the group allegedly threatened the owner and prevented workers from accessing the construction site.

“A 54-year-old owner of the construction company reported that they were the ones, a group of African men, making threats to him and employees were hindered to access the construction site. He also alleged that an undisclosed amount of cash was exported from the company. Organized crime investigation unit approached the site and arrested the suspects from the ages 25 to 43 years old who are facing extortion. All the suspects will appear on Monday, the 13th of January.”
