The students have called for an academic boycott until their demands are met.
They also want financially excluded students to be registered for the academic year.
UCT Spokesperson Elijah Moholola says, “The University of Cape Town has been dealing with disruptions on campus over the first two days in the commencement of lectures in the academic year of 2026. In terms of the demands that have been raised, we can confirm that management and the Student Representative Council (SRC) have already assisted almost all students that have been considered financially vulnerable and who are in good academic standing this would include current National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) students and NSFAS eligible students who have fee debt who come from incomes below R350 000 a year. The university has also catered for all missing middle students.”
