EFF wants Parks Tau in Parly over Gold Rush lottery licence matter

The EFF has called on the Trade and Industry Minister Parks Tau to appear before the Portfolio Committee regarding reports about the planned awarding of the National Lottery operating licence to the Gold Rush Consortium.

This follows allegations that the department is in negotiations with the company for this licence.

The minister is set to announce the bid winner on the 28th of this month.

The EFF argues that granting the tender to the company will be in contravention of the National Lottery Act, which prohibits awarding tenders to politically aligned companies.

EFF National Spokesperson Sinawo Thambo has called on the minister to withhold the announcement of the winning bid.

“So, we’ve given him 24 hours to respond to our letter, committing not to make that announcement and until he appears before the Portfolio Committee to account and provide transparency on the bidding process. Whether he has done the necessary screening and whether he’s followed the National Lotteries Act, as it relates to awarding this tender. And to clarify to us as to whether he’s followed the necessary legislation that guides this process as well,” says Thambo.
