The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng will join the Swazi Lives Matter Movement and other pro-democracy organisations in a march to highlight the ongoing struggle for democracy in Eswatini.

The Justice for Swaziland march will begin at 9:00 AM at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, with activists marching to the High Commission of Eswatini to demand greater political freedom and reforms in the country.

Qhawekazi Khumalo, convener for Swazi Lives Matter, emphasized the call for global attention on the human rights violations in Eswatini.

“We are reiterating what has been on the table with regards to the human rights violations in Swaziland. The issues around the governors—currently Swaziland is governed by a family, which is the royal family, and the people are saying we want a government for the people and by the people. And also to just really emphasize for everyone to put their attention on what is going on in Swaziland,” says Khumalo.

Khumalo highlighted the contrast between Eswatini and other African nations.

“Because in Africa, in particular, a lot of the African countries are enjoying fundamental rights, in Swaziland – it’s still a struggle because Swaziland is ruled under an absolute monarchy, the last one in Africa. We don’t know why this should be the case, particularly when the people have stood up and said enough is enough,” Khumalo added.
