EFF, DA demand probe into senior recruitment at Mahikeng municipality

Opposition parties, EFF and DA at Mahikeng Local Municipality, want the recruitment process of five senior officials at the municipality, including that of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), investigated.

This, after MEC for Cooperative Governance, Oageng Molapisi wrote a letter to the municipality’s Mayor, Tshepiso Mphehlo and threatened to go to court to obtain a declaratory order, to have the January appointment of the top officials nullified.

Molapisi cited irregularities during the time of the recruitment as a motive for his action.

EFF Spokesperson in the North West, says, Fanon Moema, says, “Full-blown investigations must be initiated. He must then also prove his allegations. We are aware that in the main, it’s not even about irregularities to a greater extent and all that. It’s in the main about politics because we are well aware that simply because these senior managers were not approved by the deployment committee of the ANC, they then felt strongly that they must reverse the entire process.”

DA councillor at the Mahikeng Local Municipality Arista Annandale, says, “The only appointment we objected to was that of Mr. Mahole as Senior Manager of Corporate Services due to allegations of fraud that are being investigated by the Hawks. We were not aware the interview process was not properly followed.”

MEC for Cooperative Governance, Oageng Molapisi, emphasised his intentions to have the appointment of the Directors for Community Services, Corporative Services, Public Safety, Socio Economic Development and Chief Financial Officer, nullified by a court, citing irregularities during the time of the recruitment as the motive for his action.

“Interviews were also conducted before the screening was completed instead of it being conducted after the screening. The place to be stationed is not indicated on the advert. The chairperson’s consolidated report was compiled after the interviews. The qualifications of some of the candidates are not in line with the requirement as per the municipal advert. The report from the national Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is not attached.”

Meanwhile, irate Mahikeng residents took to the streets to demand potable water and an end to running and overflowing of sewage, problems that have been going on for some time.
