EFF calls for Godongwana, Treasury DG to resign

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is adamant that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana should resign, accusing him of posing a threat to the country’s economic stability.

This comes after the reversal of the highly contentious 0.5% point Value-Added Tax (VAT) hike, which was due to take effect on May 1.

The EFF is also demanding the resignation of National Treasury Director-General, Dr. Duncan Pieterse.

The Party’s Senior Researcher, Dr. Gumani Tshimomola says Godongwana contravened the Public Finance Management Act requirement when he failed to table a budget before the end of the financial year.

Tshimomola says, “A budget is such an important government instrument to ensure that there’s continuity of service delivery. There’s certainty in the economy and the market.”

“ Business people know what they are dealing with, but in this stance, both the minister and the DG of the National Treasury, Duncan are unable to present a credible, believable and also a budget that will find a consensus in the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces(NCOP).”

He adds, “We call for his resignation because as things stand now, SA does not have a budget before Parliament, which we can analyse, interrogate, agree or disagree because he withdrew everything that he has tabled except the fiscal framework which was already adopted and we are challenging in court.”
