A fatal shooting crime scene.
Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has warned criminals against interfering with police operations following a fatal shootout in Mandela Park in Mthatha.
A 35-year-old male suspect who is believed to be an extortionist was killed during an intelligence-driven police operation targeting illegal firearms in the OR Tambo District.
Police say the suspect opened fire when officers forced entry into a house.
A nine millimetre pistol and ammunition were recovered.
MEC spokesperson Makhaya Komisa says, “MEC Nqatha, once again, reminds criminals to behave as law-abiding citizens, as the police will not back down when attacked. I would also like to commend the police for their ongoing and intense operations in the province, especially during this hectic period.”
Komisa adds, “No SAPS members or bystanders were injured during this incident. The firearm has been sent for ballistic testing to establish possible links to other crimes.”
