Eastern Cape Finance MEC, Mlungisi Mvoko, says government officials extorting guesthouse owners should face criminal charges. Women in Tourism from the Amathole region have raised concerns about officials allegedly exchanging travel and accommodation vouchers for cash, straining the industry.
Mvoko, who first encountered similar reports in 2019 and again in 2021, says two actions must be taken.
“Officials involved must be criminally charged, and guesthouse owners participating in this must face consequences, including potential loss of licenses.”
He plans to meet with stakeholders soon to address the issue.
