Phakama Eastern Cape is a new civic organisation that aims to make local government in the province accountable.
Newly established civic movement, Phakama Eastern Cape, says its core mandate is to inspire people of the province to challenge and hold government accountable for its inefficiencies and wasting taxpayers’ money.
The movement held its launch in Bhisho in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
It has highlighted concerns over failing governance and economic development in the province.
The movement’s organizer, Phikolomzi Adonis, says they are not intending to become a political party yet.
“For now, we are not focusing on elections because people have told us they are tired of elections and political parties that come to people and make promises that sometimes are not even feasible.”
“We are saying, no, let us not be too ambitious about being voted for and being on the ballot because that is seen as an opportunistic type of approach. We said we need to go to the people and to engage with them, to give them workshops, training and let them develop themselves.”
