Eastern Cape to intensify drunk driving crackdown on NYE

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has vowed to intensify its road safety operations with special attention on drunk and driving.

Nearly a 100 people have been arrested for drunk driving over a period of five days in the province.

To date, over 500 people have been brought to book for the transgression since the start of the festive season.

Department’s spokesperson Unathi Binqose says this is in an effort to prevent road carnages especially during the last the day of the year.

“We have lost way too many lives since the beginning of the festive season and drunk driving continues to be one of the contributing factors to those fatalities and for that reason the MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape Mr Xolile Nqatha has decided to go public about our intentions to intensify our drunk driving operations. Special focus will be on our coastal areas your Gqeberha, East London, PSJ. This by no means to say we will be ignoring those inland areas we will also keep an eye on that.”

Meanwhile, police have arrested more than 34 000 suspects countrywide for various crimes ranging from murder to rape.

This was revealed by the by the Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale during his safer festive season operations visit to the Gauteng province yesterday. He also noted that 140 hijacked and stolen vehicles were also recovered throughout the country during the same period.
