The two elderly women, who were shot and killed while asleep at their home in the Eastern Cape, have been laid to rest. The incident, which sent shockwaves across the province, happened at Upper Ncerha Village outside Alice.
Neighbours were woken up by gunshots on the night. The motive behind the brutal attack remains unknown. Abongile Jantjies reports
An emotional send-off for the siblings, 75-year-old Nomfanelo Magida and 85-year-old Ntombekhaya Magida. The incident has left community members feeling unsafe.
Family spokesperson Mzukisi Gunya says, “It is difficult with the fact that the family members are in pain, especially since nobody has been arrested yet. The most painful period was when the coffins arrived with those bodies – very painful for the family, especially when they were viewing them.”
It is not the first time a murder of this nature has occurred in the area.
“In 2017, they shot and killed my sister; three men killed her. This incident made me relive my pain. We don’t feel safe. We need an intervention. The government must make a way to confiscate all illegal firearms,’ says a community member, Ntombizakhe Mangqingqa.
No arrests have been made yet.
