The aftermath of a car accident.
The Eastern Cape has witnessed a devastating spike in road fatalities this festive season, with more lives lost compared to the previous year.
To date just over 190 people have perished on the province’s roads.
Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha says this is concerning as they had hoped to have a reduction in carnages during this period.
“The fact we were at 150 by this time last year and now 190, it’s cause for concern. So, it’s an increase. Sadly, these accidents that have occurred could have been avoided because all of them involve human behaviour, reckless driving because they are taking (place) on roads that are clearly marked what are the dos and what are the don’ts but for some reason people decide to disregard those,” says Nqatha.
