Eastern Cape police arrest two police officers for alleged extortion

Eastern Cape police have arrested two police officers for alleged extortion outside Mthatha. It is reported the officers, aged between 24 and 30 were allegedly visiting taverns in Khambi location, requesting liquor trading licences and further demanding alcohol.

Police Spokesperson, Siphokazi Mawisa, says the officials are attached to the Public Order Policing unit.

Mawisa says police received a tip-off about officers in full uniform demanding alcohol in the area, and members of the Mthatha Crime Prevention Unit were immediately activated.

“Upon arrival, members were joined by the National Intervention Unit, who found the suspects inside the identified vehicle, dressed in full uniform. One of the members was found in possession of a service firearm. The positive information led to the arrest of the two police members and were taken in for further investigation regarding their suspected involvement. The Eastern Cape police management has emphasised that no individual is above the law, and decisive action will be taken against anyone who brings the organization into disrepute, regardless of rank or position,” says Mawisa.
