The Eastern Cape Government has called on the private sector, civil society, and other stakeholders to collaborate in addressing the impact of poverty in the province.

This follows the release of Statistics South Africa’s latest General Household Survey, which presents a challenging socio-economic picture of the Eastern Cape.

According to the report, the province has the second highest number of children relying on the school nutrition programme, with 89% of them attending public schools.

Provincial government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie described the statistics as concerning.

“While these statistics are concerning, the report helps to inform the government decision-making, relying on accurate data on the diverse and ever-changing socio-economic environment of our population to help shape tomorrow,” says Rantjie.

She added that the Eastern Cape Government remains committed to addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and is currently implementing several programmes aimed at building a resilient and inclusive economy.
