Eastern Cape floods death toll rises to 88

The death toll from the devastating floods in the Eastern Cape has risen to 88.

The figure includes a ten-year-old girl from Libode. The provincial government spokesperson, Khuselwe Rantjie, says post-mortems on 83 bodies have been completed.

Ranjie says 56 bodies have been released to the bereaved families. Five bodies remain unidentified.

A National Day of Mourning is set for Thursday this coming week. More than 1000 people have been displaced by the devastating floods.

Currently, efforts are under way to restore services to Mthatha in the province following devastating floods that heavy rain caused in the area.

The provincial Health Department is on the ground assisting with replacing affecting patients’ chronic medication while the Department of Home Affairs is working on replacing lost identity documents.

Rantjie says the supply of water and electricity to most of the affected areas in the OR Tambo district has been restored.
