The expansion of the car terminal at the Port of East London is seen as an investment that will boost the economy of the Buffalo City area in the Eastern Cape. The terminal will accommodate two vessels on a 200 meter stretch berth to load and offload vehicles for exports and imports. Previously, only one vessel could be loaded due to capacity challenges. The berth was constructed over 15 months period.

East London Port Manager, Sphiwe Mthembu says this opens doors for much needed jobs.

“It means that the port of East London can carry two big car carriers, those car carriers when they come to the port they have high spinoffs in terms of economic activities in terms of people that will be working in cargo on those two vessels that will be docked, big spin offs in terms of job creation,” Mthembu says.
