E-hailing Council mobilises members for murder accused appearance

The Tshwane E-hailing Council has urged operators to come out in their numbers, as an individual suspected of involvement in the murder of a Pretoria e-hailing driver is due to appear at the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Dash cam footage recorded by the deceased driver was instrumental in identifying the female suspect.

According to the police, his hijacked vehicle and body were later discovered in Atteridgeville on the same day. Gauteng police have not ruled out further arrests.

Dash cam footage capturing the driver’s final moments has sent shockwaves through the e-hailing community, highlighting ongoing safety risks faced by drivers when responding to trip requests.

Following the incident, the Tshwane E-hailing Council is urging members to install dash cams in their vehicles.

Tshwane E-hailing Chair Marvin Ditshego says without the dash cam, it was going to be a mystery that was never going to be solved, which is what they encounter each and every day.

“Other incidents are not reported because they are not captured. I encourage each and every driver to install dash cams so that the culprits can deal with the law,” says Ditshego.

‘Arrest of two suspects’

Tshwane MMC for Roads and Transport, Tlangi Mogale, has expressed satisfaction at the arrest of two suspects in the murder of an e-hailing driver. Mogale has passed her deepest apologies to Tshwane residents and across the province over the issue of water cuts and outages.

While there is no official database tracking the number of e-hailing operators killed since the industry’s inception in 2013, reports from late 2025 indicate a surge in fatalities.

The Tshwane E-hailing Council says legislation governing the e-hailing industry must be strengthened. Its chairperson adds that he survived a similar attack in November last year.

“I know a lot of people would say that you would be able to fight your way out of, but when you’re cornered, your mind is clouded, and it’s very difficult in that situation. Only God can help some of the people to come out safe. Even today, I have not found joy when it comes to the investigation. I believe there were fingerprints on the vehicle after it was recovered, but till today, I haven’t heard anything from the police station,” adds Ditshego.

Regarding the latest incident, police say the investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are imminent.

Lt Col. Mavela Masondo of the Gauteng police says, “Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim was murdered by a male and a female who requested the services of an e-hailing in Pretoria West. The hijacked vehicle and the body of the victim were discovered in Atteridgeville on the same day. The suspect is expected to appear at Atteridgeville Magistrates Court on Monday, the 16th of February, facing charges of carjacking and murder.”

Efforts to obtain comment from the grieving family are ongoing.
