E Cape teacher arrested for alleged human trafficking, prostitution

The Eastern Cape Education Department has distanced itself from the arrest of a teacher accused of human trafficking, sexual exploitation and running illegal brothel in East London.

The female educator was arrested by the Hawks yesterday.

She allegedly recruited young women in Qumbu, Mthatha and Ngqeleni to East London, where they were allegedly coerced into prostitution.

Provincial Hawks Spokesperson Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana says the suspect allegedly profited from these illegal activities by charging accommodation fees.

Head of Department Sharon Maasdorp says they will report the teacher to the South African Council for Educators.
