The Teemaneng Running Club, Eastern Cape Provincial Government launches the inaugural Diamonds and Dorings Kimberley Big Hole Marathon.
The Northern Cape government, together with different stakeholders, has invested millions into the inaugural Diamond and Dorings Kimberley Marathon.
It is the first of its kind in the province and will be held in November, where about 2 000 runners are expected to take part.
The winner of the marathon will walk away with R200 000.
Premier Zamani Saul says this will not only attract elite runners but will also boost the province’s economy.
“We can’t allow the economy of this town to be subdued and die on our watch. We have to do all these trajectory interventions in order to ensure that the economy of this town keeps on growing. The economy grew by 1 percent, which was the highest in the province. It could be the highest in the country because the average economy of the country is 0.7 percent and Kimberley’s economic growth was standing at 1.2 percent and we need to build on that. We need to optimise the economic potential of this town.”
