E Cape farmer says feeding cattle will be a challenge as grazing land destroyed by fires

Farmers in the Kouga Municipality in the Eastern Cape says they have lost hectares of grazing land due to the veld fires that ravaged the area over the past week.

The Kabeljous area near Jeffrey’s Bay was the hardest hit, where some farmers and residents had to be evacuated as the fires threatened their homes.

The residents have since been brought back home as the fires are now under control.

One of the commercial farmers, Albe Howard, says they will battle to get feed for the cattle.

“We lost a lot of veld, cattle, we do not know where to go with the cattle, hopefully we can get feed from somewhere, bales or something, but we will survive, we need rain desperately. I do not think that rain will make the veld grow quickly though, so for the next six months we’re going to battle,” says Howard.
