E Cape Education waiting for funding to eradicate school pit toilets

1 minute

The Eastern Cape Department of Education says it is working around the clock to eradicate pit toilets at rural schools.

Briefing the media on the state of readiness for the 2025 academic year, MEC Fundile Gade says the department has utilised its allocated infrastructure grant and are hoping to get additional funding from the Department of Basic Education to tackle the remaining schools.

“Out of the 1 500 that were given, we are only left with 290 but 80 of them have been allocated a budget and we expect that when the Department of Basic Education makes adjustments, we’ll be able to deal with 200 plus, far before the end of the financial year, because we do have capacity and the implementing agency that has been appointed is capable of doing that.”

Meanwhile, the Education Minister recently announced the Department’s commitment to eradicating pit toilets in South Africa.
